La Unión is located southeast of Murcia, belonging to the municipality of Cartagena. The town is close to both the Mar Menor and Mediterranean beaches.
La Unión has two main beaches: “Portman” and “El Lastre”. Portman beach has grey dark toned sand due to the old mining industry, the beach is wide and popular among tourists. El Lastre beach is the preferred residents beach due to its calm waters and its location in a sheltered cove, the beach was not affected as badly by the mining industry as Portman. There is a small fishing port and marina nearby.
The town also has interesting museums with information regarding the old mining industry and how the people of this town used to live hundreds of years ago. La Unión has many fascinating buildings such as “El Antiguo Mercado Público” which is without a doubt one of the most outstanding works of Modernist architecture in the entire region of Murcia. Nowadays the building is used as a tourist information center.
La Unión holds an annual flamenco festival every August called “Cante de las Minas” (Song of the Mines), it is celebrated for 11 days and the acts range from poetry reading, live music and of course flamenco dancing.
