El Algar is a small town located just 11km away from Cartagena City. The cities of Murcia and the coastal area of the Mar Menor (La Manga, Los Urrutias, Los Alcázares, San Javier, …) are all very close.
One of the most characteristic beaches of El Algar is “Los Urrutias”, the beach is more than a kilometer long, with golden sand with plenty of water sports and other activities to keep busy. In addition to the Mar Menor lagoon, El Algar has a luscious green forest close to the town as another natural area much appreciated by its inhabitants. Just outside the town is “Carmolí”, a mountainous formation of volcanic origin, perfect for hikers.
One of El Algar’s most popular festivals is “La Romería de la Virgen y los Llanos” (celebrated the first week of September). For years, the Association of Neighbors of El Algar has incorporated into these celebrations acts of the so-called Historical Festivities, intended to represent the Berber invasions of the Murcian coast. The town is transformed into a medieval enclosure with balconies decorated with banners and flags. Many stalls sell handmade crafts and actors perform archery demonstrations. For a few days the urban center of El Algar becomes the interior of a medieval castle, where the children of the village can play traditional games. These festivities finish with the staging of an invasion on the beach.
The town has a large selection of bars, restaurants and shops all within close proximity. There is also a sports venue and theatre in the town centre.
